Pakatan Harapan (the Alliance of Hope) is a reformist coalition formed in 2015 out of the earlier Pakatan Rakyat pact, bringing together the multiracial People's Justice Party (PKR), the predominantly urban Democratic Action Party (DAP), and the National Trust Party (AMANAH), which had broken away from PAS.
Its platform is built on institutional reform: limits on the prime minister's term, a strengthened anti-corruption commission, parliamentary select committees, and a reduction of executive control over public institutions.
In the 2018 general election Pakatan Harapan achieved the first change of federal government in Malaysian history, ending Barisan Nasional's 61-year hold on power. That government fell in 2020 when defections cost it its parliamentary majority — the episode known as the Sheraton Move. The coalition returned to office after the 2022 general election, which produced no outright winner, at the head of a broad unity government under Anwar Ibrahim.
