Johor polls draws young and old, from 23 to 73
Danish, from Pakatan Harapan, faces a three-cornered fight in the Johor Lama seat, against Norlizah Noh of Barisan Nasional, who is seeking re-election, and Aisah Esa of Perikatan Nasional. Norlizah won the seat in 2022 with a 6,039-vote majority in a four-cornered contest against candidates from PN, PKR and Pejuang. The youngest candidates in the 2022 elections were Airel Zabridin of Pejuang in Tangkak and Kelly Chye (BN) in Mengkibol; both were aged 26. At the other end of the age spectrum is PN’s Lim Chin Eng @ Roland Lim, 73, the oldest candidate in the current election. Lim will contest the Stulang seat in a four-cornered fight against Andrew Chen of PH, BN’s Bong Seng Heng and Parti Bersama Malaysia’s Stanley Tan. Chen won the seat in 2022 with a 2,866-vote majority. In 2022, the oldest candidate was PN’s Tosrin Jarvanthi, then aged 71. Women account for 34 of the 172 candidates contesting the election, with PH fielding the highest number of female candidates at 12. By comparison, 37 of the 239 candidates in the previous election were women. Polling takes place on July 11, with early voting set for July 7.
