He said the savings would not compromise safety, athletes’ welfare or the quality of the biennial games.
“Operating costs have been reduced by optimising resources through the use of existing facilities. The games’ scope has been adjusted without compromising technical standards or essential requirements.
“For this edition of the games, existing facilities will only be upgraded where necessary to ensure that sporting events can be conducted according to the required standards,” he was quoted by Bernama as saying in the Dewan Negara today.
He was responding to Senator Tiew Way Keng, who asked for updates on coordination between Putrajaya, the Sukma supreme committee and the Selangor government on cost-saving strategies.
Mordi said the Selangor Sukma secretariat would provide daily allowances for about 12,000 athletes and officials, while accommodation, meals and transportation would be managed by the respective state contingents.
He said the decentralised approach, without a centralised games village, would also generate direct economic spillover benefits for businesses and local communities in Selangor.
“A total of 640 accommodation premises will be used by the contingents, creating opportunities for hotel operators, homestay providers and local businesses to benefit economically from the games,” he said.
Responding to a supplementary question from Senator Larry Asap on the federal government’s commitment, Mordi said the youth and sports ministry would provide an estimated RM1.75 million to ensure the smooth organisation of the games.
Mordi said the federal government would also make facilities owned by the National Sports Council, including the National Velodrome in Nilai, available at a special rental rate.
He said the Selangor Youth and Sports Complex would be available for use for the futsal, para archery and para badminton competitions at the Para Sukma games.
