Alice Lau Kiong Yieng

Alice Lau Kiong Yieng (born 30 July 1981 in Sibu, Sarawak) is a Malaysian politician and pharmacist by profession. She received her Master of Pharmacy (MPharm) from the University of Strathclyde. Lau joined the Democratic Action Party (DAP) in 2009. She first contested the Bawang Assan state seat in the 2011 Sarawak state election but was defeated. In the 2013 Malaysian general election, she was elected as the Member of Parliament (MP) for Lanang, becoming the first female opposition MP from Sarawak, a seat she successfully defended in the 2018 Malaysian general election. She served as Chairperson of the National Institute of Occupational Safety and Health (NIOSH) from October 2019 to March 2020. Since December 2022, she has served as the Deputy Speaker of the Dewan Rakyat II. She also holds positions as the Assistant International Secretary of DAP and the State Deputy Chairperson of DAP of Sarawak. In July 2019, she questioned the legality of Sarawak's secession from Malaysia in parliament. In July 2021, she distributed food aid to 1,540 families in the Lanang constituency during the Covid-19 pandemic. She tested positive for COVID-19 on 27 May 2021. Lau is married to businessman Loo Chee Wee and has a son born on 9 April 2016. Her father, Lau Cheng Kiong, was the chairman of the Pelawan branch of the Sarawak Progressive Democratic Party (SPDP). She was a recipient of the 17th Yang di-Pertuan Agong Installation Medal in 2024.
