Biography
Mohamad bin Hasan (born 2 May 1956 in Kampung Kundur Hilir, Rantau, Negeri Sembilan), widely known as Tok Mat, is Minister of Foreign Affairs and deputy president of the United Malays National Organisation (UMNO). He is the Member of Parliament for Rembau and simultaneously the state assemblyman for Rantau, and serves as deputy chairman of the Barisan Nasional coalition. He was educated at Sekolah Kebangsaan Datuk Akhir Zaman and Sekolah Menengah Kebangsaan Rantau, completed sixth form at Tuanku Ampuan Durah Secondary School in Seremban, and read international relations at the University of Malaya from 1975. He worked in banking and business before entering full-time politics. Mohamad served as Menteri Besar of Negeri Sembilan for fourteen years, from 2004 to 2018 — one of the longest state leaderships of that period — and stayed on as the state's Leader of the Opposition after Barisan Nasional lost power there in 2018, a role he held until 2023. He was elected UMNO deputy president in 2018 in the party's post-defeat leadership contest and has held the position since. He was acting president of UMNO from 19 December 2018 to 30 June 2019, during Ahmad Zahid Hamidi's six-month leave of absence. He moved to federal politics at the 2022 general election, winning Rembau, and was appointed Minister of Defence in the unity government formed by Anwar Ibrahim. In the December 2023 cabinet reshuffle three former UMNO menteris besar exchanged portfolios: Mohamad took Foreign Affairs from Zambry Abdul Kadir, who moved to Higher Education, while Mohamed Khaled Nordin took over Defence.
