Biography
Anwar bin Ibrahim (born 10 August 1947 in Bukit Mertajam, Penang) is the tenth Prime Minister of Malaysia, a position he has held since 24 November 2022. He sits in the Dewan Rakyat as the Member of Parliament for Tambun and leads the People's Justice Party (PKR), the largest component of the Pakatan Harapan coalition. Anwar first rose to prominence as a student activist, leading the National Union of Malaysian Muslim Students and co-founding the Malaysian Islamic Youth Movement (ABIM). He entered electoral politics in 1982 and rose quickly through UMNO, holding a succession of senior cabinet posts — Culture, Youth and Sports; Agriculture; Education; and Finance — before becoming Deputy Prime Minister under Mahathir Mohamad from 1993 to 1998. His dismissal in 1998 triggered the Reformasi protest movement and a prolonged period out of power. He was imprisoned from 1999 to 2004, co-founded what became PKR, and served two separate terms as Leader of the Opposition (2008–2015 and 2020–2022), with a further period of imprisonment in between. After the 2022 general election produced no outright majority, he was appointed Prime Minister at the head of a multi-party "unity government." As of writing, his government brings together former rivals — Pakatan Harapan, Barisan Nasional and the main Borneo blocs — an arrangement that illustrates how fluid Malaysian coalition politics has become.
