Biography

Syed Saddiq bin Syed Abdul Rahman (born 6 December 1992 in Pulai, Johor Bahru) has been the Member of Parliament for Muar since 2018. Appointed Minister of Youth and Sports at 25, he was the youngest person ever to hold federal cabinet office in Malaysia, serving from July 2018 until the Pakatan Harapan government fell in February 2020. He was educated at the Royal Military College and read law at the International Islamic University Malaysia, where he became one of the region's best-known university debaters, winning the United Asian Debating Championship and taking Asia's Best Speaker award at the Asian British Parliamentary championship three times. He completed the Lee Kuan Yew Senior Fellowship in Public Service in 2021. Syed Saddiq was a founding member of the Malaysian United Indigenous Party (BERSATU) in 2016 and its first youth chief. As minister he led the campaign to lower the voting age, culminating in the constitutional amendment known as Undi18 that extended the franchise to citizens aged 18 and automatically registered voters. He was removed from BERSATU in May 2020 and founded the Malaysian United Democratic Alliance (MUDA), serving as its first president from 2020 to 2023. As an independent opposition MP he has campaigned against the unequal allocation of constituency development funds between government and opposition members, and for reform of pensions for ministers and legislators. In 2021 he was charged with criminal breach of trust, misappropriation of party funds and money laundering. He was convicted by the High Court in November 2023 and sentenced to seven years' imprisonment, a RM10 million fine and two strokes of the cane, with the sentence stayed pending appeal. The Court of Appeal acquitted him in June 2025, and the Federal Court upheld that acquittal on 13 July 2026.
