Anthony Loke Siew Fook

Biography

Anthony Loke Siew Fook (born 28 April 1977 in Seremban, Negeri Sembilan) is Minister of Transport and secretary-general of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), the largest party in the Pakatan Harapan coalition. He has been the Member of Parliament for Seremban since 2013 and simultaneously holds the Negeri Sembilan state seat of Chennah. Loke was educated at St Paul's Institution and Seri Ampangan High School and graduated from Universiti Kebangsaan Malaysia in 2000 with a degree in development science. He joined DAP in 1994 at seventeen, the party's minimum membership age, and rose through its youth wing before becoming Negeri Sembilan state chairman in 2004 — the same year he won his first election, the state seat of Lobak. He entered federal politics in 2008 as MP for Rasah, switching to Seremban in 2013. He was appointed Minister of Transport in May 2018 in the first Pakatan Harapan government, holding the post until that administration collapsed in February 2020, and returned to the same portfolio in December 2022 under Anwar Ibrahim. His two terms have been dominated by aviation and rail policy, including the recovery of the aviation sector after the pandemic and long-running questions over public transport delivery. Within DAP, Loke served as parliamentary leader from 2018 to 2022 before being elected the party's sixth secretary-general in March 2022 — the post that effectively leads the party — succeeding Lim Guan Eng. He is a Buddhist and is descended from the family behind the Loke Ching Kee restaurant in Seremban, associated with the popularisation of the Chinese New Year dish yee sang.
