Biography

Ahmad Fahmi bin Mohamed Fadzil (born 4 February 1981 in Kuala Lumpur) is Minister of Communications and the official spokesperson for the cabinet of Prime Minister Anwar Ibrahim. A member of the People's Justice Party (PKR), he has been the Member of Parliament for Lembah Pantai since 2018. Fahmi took a degree in chemical engineering at Purdue University in the United States, but built his early career in the arts, working as an actor, writer and columnist before entering politics. He comes from a family with a long public record: his father was director-general of the FELDA group of companies, his mother a senior officer in the administrative and diplomatic service, and his maternal grandmother sat on the UMNO supreme council in the 1960s. His younger brother is the musician who records as Bayangan. He entered politics as secretary to Nurul Izzah Anwar, then MP for Lembah Pantai, and became PKR's communications director in 2013, writing a column for The Star. When Nurul Izzah moved to Permatang Pauh in 2018, Fahmi was selected to succeed her in Lembah Pantai and won by 5,598 votes; he defended the seat in 2022 with a larger majority of 13,912 against candidates from UMNO, PAS and Pejuang. He has been PKR's information chief since 2022. Appointed Minister of Communications and Digital in December 2022, he retained the communications half of the portfolio when it was split in the December 2023 reshuffle. His responsibilities cover broadcasting, telecommunications policy and online content regulation; his tenure has included the licensing regime for social media platforms and a code of ethics for online services, both of which have drawn debate over their implications for freedom of expression.
