Biography
Mohd Rafizi bin Ramli (born 14 September 1977 in Besut, Terengganu) served as Malaysia's Minister of Economy from December 2022 until his resignation in 2025, and was the Member of Parliament for Pandan from 2013 to 2018 and again from 2022 until he vacated the seat in May 2026. Rafizi was raised in Kemaman on the east coast; his father was a rubber tapper. He represented Malay College Kuala Kangsar in debating before winning a scholarship to read electrical engineering at the University of Leeds, and later qualified as a chartered accountant. He was drawn into politics by the Reformasi movement that followed Anwar Ibrahim's dismissal as deputy prime minister in 1998. He built his reputation on disclosure. He founded the National Oversight and Whistleblowers Centre and, later, the data-driven electoral volunteer organisation Invoke Malaysia, and became PKR's strategic director in 2010 and secretary-general in 2014. He won Pandan in 2013 with a majority of 26,729 votes. In 2014 he engineered the "Kajang Move", an unsuccessful attempt to install Anwar as Menteri Besar of Selangor. He did not contest the 2018 election because of a pending appeal against a 30-month sentence for disclosing banking details in the National Feedlot Corporation case. After a period out of politics he returned in 2022, defeating Saifuddin Nasution Ismail for the PKR deputy presidency and retaking Pandan by some 48,000 votes. As Economy Minister he oversaw work including the 13th Malaysia Plan. He resigned from cabinet after losing the 2025 PKR deputy presidency to Nurul Izzah Anwar by 9,803 votes to 3,866. In May 2026 he and Nik Nazmi Nik Ahmad left PKR, took over Parti Bersama Malaysia, and resigned their seats rather than be accused of party-hopping.
