Biography
Gobind Singh Deo (born 19 June 1973) is Minister of Digital in the unity government led by Anwar Ibrahim, appointed in December 2023, and has been the Member of Parliament for Damansara since November 2022. He is national chairman of the Democratic Action Party (DAP) and, when first appointed to cabinet in 2018, became the first Sikh to serve as a Malaysian minister. A lawyer by profession, Gobind is the son of Karpal Singh, the DAP leader and constitutional litigator known as the "Tiger of Jelutong"; Gobind himself acquired the nickname "Little Lion of Puchong". His brothers are also elected representatives — Ramkarpal Singh as MP for Bukit Gelugor and Jagdeep Singh Deo in the Penang state assembly. He entered parliament at the 2008 general election, winning Puchong by 19,972 votes amid the swing to the opposition in Selangor, and held the seat for three terms with steadily larger majorities — 32,802 in 2013 and 47,635 in 2018 — before moving to the new Damansara constituency in 2022. Gobind was Minister of Communications and Multimedia from May 2018 until the Pakatan Harapan government collapsed in February 2020. At the DAP national congress in March 2022 he was returned to the central executive committee with the highest vote of any candidate and was made deputy national chairman, subsequently rising to the chairmanship. His current portfolio, created in the December 2023 reshuffle, covers digital infrastructure, data policy and cybersecurity — including the rollout of 5G and the regulation of online platforms.
