Lim Guan Eng

Lim Guan Eng (born 8 December 1960) is a Malaysian politician and accountant. A member of the Democratic Action Party (DAP), he has served as Member of Parliament (MP) for Bagan and Member of the Penang State Legislative Assembly (MLA) for Air Putih since March 2008. He served as the Minister of Finance of Malaysia from 2018 to 2020 and as the 4th Chief Minister of Penang from March 2008 to May 2018. His political career began as MP for Kota Melaka from August 1986 to November 1999. Within DAP, he held significant roles including DAP Socialist Youth chairman (1989-1995), Deputy Secretary-General (1995-2004), and Secretary-General (September 2004-March 2022), and was elected National Chairman in 2004. Lim has faced legal challenges, including corruption charges related to a bungalow purchase in 2016 (discharged) and an arrest in 2020 concerning an undersea tunnel project during his tenure as Penang Chief Minister. He is the son of Lim Kit Siang and is married to Betty Chew Gek Cheng, with whom he has four children. His sister is Lim Hui Ying, MP for Tanjong. He graduated from Monash University with a Bachelor of Economics.
